The Devon Dog Show was overflowing with Bedlington Terriers!   Don’t they look like little lambs?  They are so fuzzy with a wooly coat and very unique grooming.    I read that the fur for a show trim must not exceed 1″ in length, but could be slightly longer on the legs.   This breed is a little tricky to photography.   When I photographed them ‘head on’, I could barely see the eyes because of all the fur.  They also have a longer nose which resulted in a shallow DOF.  Below are 2 more images.  The bottom image was photographed with the Canon 135mm soft focus lens.

Yesterday’s Devon Dog Show in Ludwig’s Corner, Pa. was terrific!  Great attendance and perfect weather.  Over 2500 dogs were entered and when all was said and done, this 3 year old beautiful Irish Terrier, “Fen”,  won Best in Show!  The bottom photo shows his excitement when he won the Terrier Group.

Some pets don’t mind wearing clothes and dressing up for special holidays like Halloween and Christmas.  My cat Socrates was a good sport about wearing the crazy things I bought for him – like the time he dressed as a mouse for Halloween, or when he posed as an angel for our holiday cards.  Sebastian and Tara are not as cooperative.   I stopped in Target today and they have a really good selection of pet costumes for Halloween.  Yes, Sebastian and Tara have new outfits that I will HOPEFULLY be able to photograph them wearing in the next couple of weeks.   Stay tuned for some extreme cuteness!  That is, if I can get Sebastian to stay out from under the bed long enough to photograph him…..and if Tara will stay awake long enough on the windowsill so that you can see her outfit.  This should be fun!  🙂   How do you like the snazzy fleece turtleneck that this Italian Greyhound is wearing?

I love the name of this breed – the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever – “Toller” for short!  I first ‘met’ this breed at the Harrisburg Kennel Club Dog Show a few years ago.  They are bred to toll {or lure} and retrieve waterfowl and they are from Nova Scotia, thus their name.  They have a water repellent coat because the were originally bred to run and play along the shoreline to lure the ducks in close enough for the hunter.  I don’t like to think about the rest of the job these dogs were bred to do because I’m not a fan of hunting for any reason.  Fortunately, the NSDTR is a multi-faceted breed that is at home in the water, in the show ring, and at home with the family.  They are super cute dogs!

Technically it’s called ‘bait’ – the food or object that is used to get a dog’s attention and encourage them to be alert in the show ring so that the judge can see the dog’s expression.  Bait can be liver, cooked chicken, cheese or a hot dog.  Some handlers keep the bait in their own mouth.  Others put it in their pocket or a bait bag that can be clipped onto their belt.  No matter what it is or where it’s kept, the dogs seem to love and respond to it.  In this photo a junior handler is showing her Whippet a treat before going into the show ring.  Do you think the dog was given the treat or do you think it was just a tease?
