How sad to have learned that James, the English Springer Spaniel who won Best in Show at Westminster in 2007 has died.   I met James just 2 months after his win when he visited the Harrisburg Kennel Club Dog Show in April 2007.  The dog world has lost a true champion.  What a gorgeous dog!  You will be missed James!  To learn more about James, visit his website here:  www.felicityenglishspringers.com/james.htm

Well, there aren’t a whole lot of “healthy snack” choices in this image, are there?  No salad, tofu, yogurt…not that I would have selected one of those anyway, but….!  🙂   I usually take along something to eat when I go off for a day and I know that food availability will be limited.  This is an image of a food truck at the Bucks County Kennel Club Dog Show that I attended yesterday.  Around noon I had a craving for a Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpet (my favorite!) and gave in and bought some … YUM!    That kept me going for the rest of the day!

I am forever amazed by this breed – the Komondor.  They really DO look like a giant dust mop with their heavy coat of white cords!  They were bred to guard  herds of sheep and cattle and their coat is protection from weather and helps them to blend in with the flock they are guarding.  I heard a Komondor owner telling someone once that after bathing, their dog’s coat took 2 days to dry!  Holy cow!  I guess they weren’t using a blow dryer!

As a spectator, I always feel underdressed at dog shows.  The handlers showing the dogs in the ring are always dressed beautifully — men wearing suits and ties and women wearing dresses, skirts and sweaters, or pants outfits.  I always admire the well dressed handler who not only takes care to groom their dog perfectly, but also to ensure that they look their best as well.  From what I’ve read, the handler is to dress so as NOT to draw attention away from the dog.  The judge’s eyes should be on the dog…not the handler’s flashy outfit.  One thing that always catches my attention is the shoes worn by the women handlers.  Since they are trotting around a show ring with their dog, they must wear shoes that are comfortable and that protect them from slipping.  Leather soles, sandals, and stiletto heels are probably out!  🙂  Still, it’s often quite a contrast to see a woman in a beautiful suit and then wearing shoes that are not so much attractive as practical.  I love it when cute practical shoes are incorporated into the outfit…like in the blog image!   Yay for cute shoes!   Yes, your shoes can be comfy, safe and cute all at the same time!

Calm, cool & collected….that’s the feeling I get from the expression on this Irish Setter’s face.  Just another day at the dog show….I’ll look pretty….win a few ribbons….my owner and handler will be thrilled…..maybe I’ll get some extra kisses and a new toy….and all is well with the world!   Now how soon can I have that new toy???
