Three new breeds were introduced last weekend at The National Dog Show Presented by Purina. One is the Chinook, a member of the Working Group and bred as a sled dog in New Hampshire. This breed is affectionate, playful and athletic and its name means “warm winter winds”. Watch for the Chinook along with 182 other breeds and varieties that will appear on The National Dog Show Presented by Purina immediately following the Macy’s Parade on NBC Thanksgiving Day.

I LOVE this image from The National Dog Show Presented by Purina. If only all of my dog photography images could have such simple composition and clean lines! I love the gentle way that the handler is holding the lead and the focus of the dog’s attention on the bait in her right hand. The Boston Terrier is not a member of the Terrier Group, as you might think, but is instead a member of the Non-Sporting Group. They are nicknamed “The American Gentleman” because they are truly an All-American breed (originating in Boston, Massachusetts) that has a gentle personality and dapper appearance. Groups and Best in Show are judged in the big arena at The National Dog Show Presented by Purina. There are thousands of people, lights, TV cameras, a PA system and announcer, music, and a whole lot of photographers! I’m sure it is very daunting for some dogs who are not used to being in the spotlight at a large show. It was interesting to watch their reaction to moving TV cameras and the sound of camera shutters firing in rapid succession. Some were not at all interested and others paid very close attention and even barked at the TV camera. I’m pretty sure this pup is looking at me and asking, “Did you get my best side?” 🙂

The National Dog Show Presented by Purina is a benched show which is a wonderful opportunity for spectators to come and meet the dogs, owners and handlers and learn about their favorite breeds! It’s also a great opportunity to get up close and personal for some dog photography! Here a handsome model is sitting pretty for his portrait! I can’t tell you who won Best in Show …. you’ll have to tune in to find out!

John O’Hurley spent time yesterday reading his new book to kids at The National Dog Show Presented by Purina near Philadelphia, Pa. The book is titled The Perfect Dog and is available now for purchase. Each child had an opportunity to chat with John and receive an autographed copy of the book. The kids had a blast and it looked like the big kid in the room, John, was having a blast as well! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina is one of my favorite events to photograph all year! I had SO MUCH fun (and came home with over 3,000 new photos to edit!) OMG! Plan to watch The National Dog Show Presented by Purina on NBC immediately following the Macy’s Parade on Thanksgiving Day!
