Saving Lives … One Amphibian At a Time
Posted on May 17, 2015 in Wildlife
I was in the garden yesterday and heard rustling in the leaves behind me. In my neck of the woods (literally!), I never know what to expect. I looked and saw the frog on the left (above) hopping across the driveway really fast. In close pursuit was a SNAKE….heading right toward me, the frog and the open garage door! Dang, I HATE snakes! I grabbed a nearby brick and threw it in the direction of the snake with the intent on getting it to move in another direction. It worked. I missed the snake by a mile, but it slithered back into some leaves on the edge of the driveway. The little frog escaped being eaten for lunch and I quickly closed the garage door! I think the snake was a garter snake – harmless, but still! As for the identification of the frogs, well, the one on the left might be a chorus frog and the one on the right (which I found today in the hostas) could be a toad. I see a lot of frogs in the area of my pond and I love having them around. Snakes not so much! I keep wondering where the one I saw yesterday went!
