When I left work today, it was 103 degrees outside at 6:15 PM.  At lunch time the steering wheel in my car was so hot that I had to hold it with a tissue.  Now THAT’S hot!  Too hot by my standards!  In keeping with the season and the extreme heat, I thought I’d continue to post images of ways to keep your dog (and yourself!) cool!  It’s so important to protect our pets from heat stroke.  In the top blog image, a woman is keeping her feetsies cool by going barefoot while her St. Bernard is covered with a cooling blanket.  They are shown again below just before ring time at the Chester Valley Kennel Club Dog Show in June.

Sebastian is terrified of fireworks….actually, all loud noises.  He doesn’t like thunder, the vacuum, the doorbell, or the telephone.  This weekend is just about his least favorite of the year as there are always folks putting off fireworks in my neighborhood.  I have tried turning up the TV really loud in the hopes that it will drown out the fireworks, but that doesn’t help much.  Plus my neighbors probably think I’ve become very hard of hearing!  🙂   Sebastian usually hides out under the bed until things quiet down.  Thankfully he doesn’t have severe noise phobia to the extent of some animals [panting, drooling, shaking, refusing to eat, etc.], but still I stay home and keep him calm…letting him know that the noise isn’t going to hurt him.  Please remember to keep your pets safe this 4th of July weekend…particularly keep them indoors if they have a fear of fireworks.

Bulldogs are especially susceptible to heat stroke so if you’re a bulldog owner, pay extra attention to helping your dog stay cool.  Keep them out of the sun, walk in the early morning or later in the evening, use cooling mats that can be placed in their crate or bed, offer plenty of water, and provide an air conditioned room in your home.   In this blog image, a cute bulldog is catching a breeze from a fan placed on the ground in front of him.   Ahhhh….that feels good!

I love to watch “Roy” [Ch. Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins] in the ring.  He’s elegant, graceful, has a gorgeous coat, and lots of personality.  Roy is a brown Bearded Collie and is the #1 herding dog in the country.  At the Bryn Mawr Kennel Club Show he was right in front of me during the Group judging and the only lens I had with me was a 70-200mm.  I had a foot injury and found one of the few chairs to be had, so I wasn’t about to move.  Needless to say, I have a lot of close ups, like this one.  To learn more about Roy, visit his webpage here:  http://tolkienoes.com/Tolkien_Raintree_Mister_Baggins.htm

Basset Hounds are so cute with their short wrinkled legs and belly that almost touches the ground!  Oh and those long ears are to die for….such a sweet breed!
