Do you know this breed? It’s currently being shown in the Miscellaneous class and is called the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje. The name is pronounced KOY KER HOUND YEH and means Dutch Decoy Dog. They only come in one color – red and white with black markings and are often used for search and rescue as well as service dogs. They just became eligible to enter the Miscellaneous class last July and have been assigned the Sporting Group designation. Their little whiskers remind me of a cat!

I first saw this breed in the summer and immediately fell in love. This is a Lagotto Romagnolo – currently shown in the Miscellanous class. How cute is this pup? The breed is from Italy and their name means “lake dog from Romagnolo” (an area in Italy). They are a water retriever and hunting dog and mighty cute I think! How can you not love the expression in this photo?

Do you know this breed? The title of this post is a hint! If you guessed Australian Shepherd, you’re close, but not quite right. This is a Miniature American Shepherd – a small, athletic herding dog that originated in the United States. They were recognized by the AKC in June 2012 as a new developing breed and are now shown in the Miscellaneous Class at shows. Miniature American Shepherds are loyal companions and working dogs with what is called a “watchful expression”.

From a photography standpoint, the William G. Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown, NJ is a fun location for a dog show! The show is held on a hockey rink with arena seating on two sides. This is a bonus for spectators, weary handlers, and dogs alike! Most often there are no seats at a dog show so this was like winning the lottery where seating is concerned! I loved this scene with the handler and her Pumi relaxing before their ring time. Is this not the cutest dog? The Pumi is a Hungarian herding breed and they are very energetic and like to have a job to do! This Pumi’s job was to look adorable for a photo! His name is “Abiqua Herceg”.
