So, it’s the day of one of my favorite outdoor dog shows of the season and I’m raring to go and see my friends and photograph lots of beautiful pups. The day dawns and the sun rises.  Poop!  Outdoor dog show photography in the bright sun is not fun at all.  Glare, shadows, blown out highlights, squinting dogs … all problematic from a photography standpoint.  Case in point …. these Spinone Italiano twins.  The photo above was taken late in the day when the sun was low and they were in the shade.  The nice even light is exactly what I want in my dog show photos.  Now take a look at the image below of the same dogs taken in the morning light.  It’s a great movement shot showing their perfect synchronization, however, the light is awful. Not to mention the crazy busy background which I could not control.  Just what I want … yellow caution tape running through the center of an image.  I know I can’t control the weather, but I sure do love it when the planets align and the clouds appear on outdoor dog show days!

I spent two fun-filled days at the Hatboro and Devon dog shows over the weekend!  The shows had it all — sun, clouds, rain, wind, drama, excitement, old friends, new friends, wonderful dogs, and a couple thousand photos to review!  Here’s a favorite shot from Devon on Saturday….alone in the ring.

Maybe you’ve seen the wonderful ads created by Anita Palmer and featuring photos that I’ve taken of Berger Picard, Gabby, on my Facebook page from time to time.  I just love this dog and was so excited to see her at the show in Macungie, Pa. earlier this month!  Gabby is the first Berger Picard to win Best of Breed at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club as the breed was newly entered to the Herding Group last year.

I have so many places that I want to photograph, but I’m always waiting for a nice bright overcast day. Unfortunately, this summer has had very few days without sun. The light at the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club show on Saturday morning was wonderful.  No sun glare, no intense shadows … just nice even light for photographing the dogs.  I love the sweet expression of this Irish Red & White Setter.  This is one of my favorite shots of the day!

A kiss for the PBGV (Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen) after the Owner-Handler Group judging at the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club show on Saturday.  I just love this spunky breed!
