Month: May 2012

I am always so happy when someone asks me to hold their dog’s leash!  First off, it tells me that they trust me with their faithful companion and I feel very honored for that!  Secondly, since I don’t have a dog of my own, I love having the opportunity to feel like I do….even for a minute or two!  Last month I got to hold Rufus’ leash at Bark for Life and this month, two dogs at different shows.  The first was a Great Dane that I was asked to hold the leash for while the dog’s owner cleaned up after the dog had used the “restroom”.  The woman was picking up from the grass and going to a garbage can and the whole time I was holding the Dane’s leash for her, he was “galloping” and trying to get over to where his mamma was.  That was A LOT of dog to hold, let me tell you!  It took both hands and some calming words to keep me from being dragged across the grass!  This woman was wrangling 2 Danes and a grooming tool bag – I admire her strength!  Last weekend I held the leash of the dog in the blog image…an English Toy Spaniel.  Definitely more my size!  This pup was sitting on a grooming table while his or her handler was in the ring with another dog.  We watched from the sidelines while I scratched his/her ears and then I had to return the leash to the handler.  If anyone is looking for a part-time leash holder, I am a very willing and capable job candidate!  [Oh and for payment, just a doggie kiss will do!]   🙂

“I simply remember my favorite things….and then I don’t feel so bad!”  One of my most favorite things is dogs [and cats!] with blue eyes!  Adorable!

Judge Jean Fournier’s selection for Best in Show at the Chester County Kennel Club show on Saturday, May 12th was the Doberman Pinscher, Jackson [GCH CH D’s Remember When].  That was his 8th Best in Show in 2012.

The Best in Show ribbon at a dog show is awarded to one of 7 dogs.  The winning dog from each group is represented in the BIS competition – sporting, non-sporting, toy, terrier, working, hound, and herding groups.  At this point, all 7 dogs are winners and are worthy of the BIS ribbon.   How does the judge ever choose a winner?  On Saturday at the Chester Valley Kennel Club show, the BIS judge was Jean Fournier and her daunting task was to select a winner from these breeds:  the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Whippet, Airedale Terrier, Papillion, Bulldog, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.  Who did she select for BIS?  Stay tuned tomorrow to see the winner.  In the blog images Jean is signing the judges book and noting who won BIS – a well guarded secret until she makes her announcement!

Seeing veteran show dogs being honored is so heartwarming.  The Chester Valley Kennel Club had a “Best Veterans in Show Competition” over the weekend and it was wonderful to see the tribute and applause given to these more mature and experienced show dogs.  Veteran classes are for dogs over 7 years of age, but you’d never know it by watching them go around the ring.  They were just as spry and showy as their younger counterparts.  The blog image features the dog that won the Best Veteran competition on Saturday.
