Month: August 2012

I don’t often take a lot of what I call “running around the ring” photos.  I tend to concentrate more on the portrait or relationship type of image.  At the Penn Ridge Kennel Club show in Harrisburg on Saturday, the Group/Best in Show ring was very very large.  Thankfully there are always chairs available at the Harrisburg shows, so I grabbed a seat in a spot where I could photograph dogs and handlers running straight toward the camera.  It was a good chance to practice movement images – absolutely more difficult at an indoor show with not so great lighting.  This image was shot at ISO 4000, 1/500th of a second shutter speed, f/2.8 and I even over-exposed the shot by 1-1/3 stops.  To whomever invented de-noising software….thank you very much!!!   I couldn’t live without it for these images as the high ISO resulted in a lot of digital noise in the photos.  Since a flash is definitely a no-no at the shows, there were no other options but to up the ISO and shoot away!  Don’t you just love to see the movement of an Afghan Hound as they run around the show ring?  Stunning!

Meet my newest little buddy … Welsh Springer Spaniel, “Gibbs” [Statesman’s Summer Celebration].  I met Gibbs and his mom at the Penn Ridge Kennel Club show in Harrisburg on Saturday and fell in love instantly with this little guy!  He’s 12 months old and hails from Georgia.  You will be hearing a lot from him in the coming days…..Gibbs is a champion in the making!

This is one of my favorite images from yesterday’s Penn Ridge Kennel Club dog show in Harrisburg, Pa.  This is a beautiful Havanese sitting ring side on a grooming table with a pink towel.  I love the color combo – pink, black and white – and the simplicity of the scene.  Can’t you just feel that cool wet nose right now?

Barb and Rufus at The National Dog Show 2009

We all cheered like crazy when Colored Bull Terrier, Rufus, [Champion Rocky Tops Sundance Kid ROM, CGC, TDIA] won Best in Show at Westminster in 2006.  It was the first time that a Colored Bull Terrier had ever gone BIS at Westminster and what a champion!  He won the hearts of everyone that he met and went on to become a true ambassador for his breed.  Rufus went to heaven today after spreading joy on this earth for 12 years.  He will be so missed by everyone that knew him, including me.  I met Rufus just 2 months after he won BIS at Westminster.  He was so lovable and I fell in love with his sweet personality.  I saw him most recently in April when his proud parents Barb and Tom so graciously brought him to Pennsylvania for a Bark for Life event to benefit the American Cancer Society.  Spending the day with Barb, Tom and Rufus was a special treat and I’m so happy to have had that time with them.  I will always remember you Rufus……

Photographing solid black dogs has to be one of my toughest assignments….especially when I can’t use any lighting equipment indoors.  It’s really easy to lose the detail in the coat.  I was so pleased with my photos of this black Cocker Spaniel!  A gorgeous dog, beautifully groomed and look at that shiny coat!  I am partial to Cocker Spaniels as that’s the breed I had when I was little.  My Cocker was black with tan markings.  I must say, she was the cutest dog ever born!  [Okay, so I’m partial!]
