Month: January 2018

With temps in the upper 40’s this weekend, it was a nice opportunity to venture out to Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area to check the status of the waterfowl.  I need to practice my bird photography in preparation for the influx of Snow Geese that will be arriving soon at Middle Creek.  This is one of my favorite times of the year to get out and photograph!  This weekend’s visit to Middle Creek was interesting since it was the first time I’ve ever been there in winter before the huge numbers of snow geese arrive.  I was fortunate to see 5 bald eagles – mostly juvenile – and plenty of Canada Geese.  Some Snow Geese were also on the lake, but not very many.  It was a beautiful day for a hike and for spending time outdoors!

Enough of the winter photos…..I’m dreaming of warm summer days and watching the Keystone Dock Dogs at Codrous Blast!  Only 5 more months … ugh!

It’s fun to revisit photos from the past that have never been processed, like this one.  It was taken last year in February as I was scouting around Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in search of an owl.  I love barns and the older and more rustic the better!  This one had tons of character!  I added a touch of Topaz Impression for a painting-like effect.

As I was driving home this afternoon, I saw a familiar sight in the distance and immediately recognized the flight pattern of snow geese!  It was dusk and they were returning to the fields to roost for the night.  I was totally unprepared to photograph them, but was on my way home from a super fun puppy photo shoot, so I had some gear in the car.  I had heard that there were snow geese in various areas of the Lehigh Valley, but have never ventured out to look for them.   I drove in the direction of the geese, following them in the sky until I came upon the field where they were landing.  I had a few minutes of unexpected fun photographing the geese in a brand new location!  This one is a favorite – snow geese silhouetted against the sky at dusk.

This wreath and the row of trees caught my eye one day last week when I was driving on the road alongside the cemetery.  I forgot about it until the snow came over the weekend and then I decided to take a ride and see if my vision was what I expected when I was in the cemetery and closer to the subject.  Seeing all of the Christmas wreaths with bright red bows decorating the graves reminds of those I am missing this holiday season … and every day of the year.
