Red Doors

Ahhh….my alma mater, Muhlenberg College. What a beautiful campus with amazing architecture! Most of the buildings have red doors as a sign of welcome and typical of the European/Protestant [Lutheran] heritage of the college. The dome/bell tower is the focal point of the campus. I spent many a happy day here and have some wonderful memories of interesting classes and inspiring professors. It was at Muhlenberg that I learned to develop film in their darkroom. It was a summer photography class and I loved most every aspect of it … except being in that tiny room, in total darkness, with a canister and a can opener. I’ll never forget the time we were assigned to photograph motion, so I went to an amusement park and shot a roll or two of film. Something went terribly wrong in the developing and the negatives were blank!! I had to drive all the way back to the amusement park [1-1/2 hours each way], reshoot the assignment, go back to the college and develop and print the images all before the next class. Aaaacckkkk!! I still am thankful to have had the opportunity to learn to develop and print my own images in the darkroom! Thank you Muhlenberg!!
Ahhh darkroom days, those were the best and most stressful times of college! I miss developing my own film and prints, but loading the film onto the reels, yeah no fun in that dark closet. I hope all that driving for that assignment got you a good grade 🙂 Very nice shot by the way! What did you shoot with? I like the effect.

My Son Doug’s alma mater also. I always loved visiting him on that, oh-so, beautiful campus. I used to always rave about how nicely they did everything – the library, special weekends, art shows, counselors, etc. Each time my husband would remind me about how much we were paying and said everything SHOULD be perfect for that price!!!!!
A great school!

Muhlenberg is a wonderful school…I loved attending there even though it was as an evening student! Ashley – I shot this image with my Canon Rebel and the 18-55mm lens. Strangely enough, I found a fisheye attachment for my Nikon point & shoot and it turned out that it fit the 58mm threads on the Canon lenses, too. So, I popped it on top of the 18-55 for a sort of fisheye look. I just added some extra blur to the edges to point the focus on the bell tower. Glad you like the effect. Not bad for a $28 attachment, huh?
