I saw the lighthouse as I was driving in to Cape May, NJ.  The GPS was programmed with a destination of Cape May Point, NJ, which is a nature area that includes the lighthouse.  When the GPS said we had reached our destination, there was no lighthouse to be found.  How can you lose something THAT big?  It’s 157 feet tall! Thankfully just a quick few blocks away was this majestic structure, which, by the way, is still operational.  Visitors can climb the 199 stairs to the top for an exceptional few of the peninsula.  Definitely a “bird’s eye” view!

Perched on what was left of a pier along the shore in Cape May, NJ is this lone gull.  A background texture and watercolor effect were added in post processing.  I love shore birds!

Birds are so industrious!  Seeing the intricate nests that they build for their babies always amazes me.  I had a wonderful class in college called “Biology of Birds” that developed my interest in birds, their habitats, migration patterns, nesting habits, and even their specific calls.  I still maintain my “life list” of species that I’ve seen and it would be so much fun to try and add a photo of each species to that list.  If you have any favorite Pennsylvania birding locations, please share as I’d love to get out and do more bird photography!

I haven’t had the opportunity to photograph herons all that often, but just enough to know that they aren’t big on posing for photos!  They are very shy and often take to flight before you have an opportunity to get close enough for a good shot.  If you are quick enough to catch the take off or a photo of them in flight … bravo!   Otherwise, you pretty much have to be still and quiet or take the smallest of steps as you inch a little closer for a picture.  This one tolerated me for a little while, but when I got closer than he/she liked, off she went and landed on a boat dock in the bright sun.  I did take a photo of the heron on the dock, but prefer this image of the bird in the water surrounded by rocks and various types of vegetation.

This mom knew what she was doing when she selected a spot for her nest!  It’s underneath the tiles of a roof high above the ground where there is protection from rain, wind, sun and predators.  The little babies have a cozy spot where they wait for mom to bring them snacks.  How cute are these baby birds?
