Ahhh….my alma mater, Muhlenberg College. What a beautiful campus with amazing architecture! Most of the buildings have red doors as a sign of welcome and typical of the European/Protestant [Lutheran] heritage of the college. The dome/bell tower is the focal point of the campus. I spent many a happy day here and have some wonderful memories of interesting classes and inspiring professors. It was at Muhlenberg that I learned to develop film in their darkroom. It was a summer photography class and I loved most every aspect of it … except being in that tiny room, in total darkness, with a canister and a can opener. I’ll never forget the time we were assigned to photograph motion, so I went to an amusement park and shot a roll or two of film. Something went terribly wrong in the developing and the negatives were blank!! I had to drive all the way back to the amusement park [1-1/2 hours each way], reshoot the assignment, go back to the college and develop and print the images all before the next class. Aaaacckkkk!! I still am thankful to have had the opportunity to learn to develop and print my own images in the darkroom! Thank you Muhlenberg!!

As we begin a new year, we tend to look back, remembering the blessings and sorrows of the past 12 months. On this first day of January, let’s take a few moments to be thankful for all that we have been given and for all of those who have blessed our lives, including our beloved pets, especially those who we have had to say goodbye to this past year. Best wishes to each of you for a happy & healthy new year!

I ventured into the Peirce-du Pont House at Longwood Gardens to warm up on a very cold day. The elegant staircase was decorated for the holidays and so I photographed not the staircase itself, but the reflection of the staircase in the adjacent mirrored wall. The mirror makes for an optical illusion – creating the impression of 2 staircases and a much larger room. The Peirce-du Pont House was built in 1730 by Joshua Peirce, a Quaker Farmer. It was later purchased by Pierre du Pont in 1906 in order to save the property and the amazing trees from being harvested. Thus, the building is now known as the Peirce-du Pont House.

These two cutie-pies had a comfy lap to snuggle on while watching the Group and Best in Show judging at the Valley Forge Kennel Club Dog Show earlier this year. I am forever amazed at how well all of the dogs interact with one another at a dog show. There can be 2,000+ dogs in one location and I have rarely seen any ‘incidents’ … all seem to respect one another and enjoy each other’s company. There is lots of sniffing and curiosity for sure, but usually they are all having fun and saying ‘woof’ to their pals. After all, the dogs travel from show to show throughout the year and get to know many of the dogs they compete against. It’s like one big happy furry family!
