Not more than 2′ from the bedroom window is a Yew bush that houses a bird feeder. The bush offers the birds a little bit of protection from the elements while they dine. Because the feeder is only about 4 or 5 feet off of the ground, it also attracts deer! This is good news for Brewster and Savannah! Not only do they have an opportunity to watch their feathered friends dart in and out for seeds, but deer regularly visit the feeder as well – especially at night! Whenever the motion light turns on, Brewster and Savannah race to the window to watch a real live version of “Animal Planet”. This was 11:30 PM last night. The snow was falling and it was blustery and cold, but the deer are hungry and they came to say hello and have a snack!

I stopped by to say hello to the raptors at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center this weekend. Meet General George Patton, the resident bald eagle on site. This eagle came to the center in 2001 with life threatening injuries and, sadly, is unable to be returned to the wild. CCEEC is a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility near Jim Thorpe, Pa. The organization partners with local veterinarians and cares for hundreds of sick, injured, orphaned or displaced animals each year. CCEEC is a wonderful place to visit and see birds of prey and other animals ‘up close and personal’. It is situated near Mauch Chunk Lake Park – a beautiful recreational lake with many hiking trails. The center offers educational programs for schools, civic organizations and the public. Stop by and say hi to General Patton if you are in the area!

Being by the sea is peaceful and calming. I can sit and listen to the sounds of the waves and the gulls all day long and block out the rest of the world completely. The sea mesmerizes me! On this past Saturday, the gulls were playfully running first toward and then away from the waves as they came ashore….looking for morsels to nibble on in the foam and sand.

NOW I know who has been nibbling on the plants in my garden! This little fawn and his or her brother….along with mom, of course! All 3 were in my yard having brunch on Sunday! How could I ever get upset with a critter this adorable? I’m off to buy more plants……! 🙂

This is my first ever photograph of an Eastern Bluebird. I spotted it at Middle Creek Wildlife Management area in Pennsylvania. As I was taking baby steps – with long breaks in between – to get closer, a family walked by and away went the Bluebird. I would have loved to have come a few steps closer for this image, but I’ll take what I can get! My yard is too wooded to attract Eastern Bluebirds so I rarely see them, despite having several Bluebird houses scattered around the property. Their favorite habitat is open fields, pastures, parks and the like. The blue color of this bird really stood out against the gray winter landscape at Middle Creek.
