The lake at Middle Creek Wildlife Refuge is still mostly frozen, which is keeping the numbers down a bit on the migration of snow geese and tundra swans. While watching the activity yesterday afternoon, I noticed some gulls flying overhead. One gull landed on the ice, found a small opening and began ‘fishing’. He was poking his beak in and out of the water to get the attention of the fish below. After a few minutes, he caught one and pulled it up onto the ice. The fish was almost as big as the gull! We watched as he happily had his lunch. Meanwhile, another gull was flying around with his eye on the fish. Before long, he swooped down and stole it away from gull #1 and found a spot further out on the lake where he could enjoy his ‘catch’. Hey guys….can’t we all just live together happily and share?! 🙂

The swimming hole is actually the little pond in my backyard. The very same pond where the water lilies grow. This toad had the whole pond to himself the other night and he was quite the model. Normally when I go near the pond, the toads and frogs hop in the water. This little guy didn’t and – believe it or not – he let me get THIS CLOSE with the Lensbaby 3G and +4 macro lens to photograph him. I was literallly only inches away from him. Good thing he wasn’t an “attack toad”! 🙂

I was out briefly with my camera today but didn’t come back with many images that I liked. Getting around was difficult. Many areas that I wanted to visit in my neighborhood were inaccessible due to the depth of the snow and my unwillingness to get ridiculously wet. It seemed that the kids and birds were having the most fun. The rest of us “older folks” just deemed the results of the blizzard as a major nuisance. I may not see the grass in my yard until May……..

Holy cow….THIS is a blizzard! I didn’t venture any farther than the front porch today to capture these images. How could I? The snow is well over my knees and I don’t have high enough boots! I just want to snap my fingers and have it all disappear! The birds were enjoying the feast of sunflower seeds that my feeders provided and they didn’t seem to mind the cold and blowing snow. There were Tufted Titmouses, Black Capped Chickadees, White Breasted Nuthatches, Mourning Doves, a Bluejay and the ever-present gray squirrels. I hope I see my most-favorite person ever very soon….the man who comes to plow my driveway! 🙂
