Month: June 2010

According to the AKC website, Shetland Sheepdogs (“Shelties”) are working Collies in miniature.  They have a long rough coat and they excel in obedience, agility, conformation and, of course, herding.   I am always intrigued at all of the different shapes and sizes of dog breeds.  Think about it – dogs can have short tails, long ears, short noses, long fur, no fur, curly fur, long legs, short legs, …you name it!  Their shape and size is a good characteristic of what the dog has been bred to do.  For example, dogs that “go to ground” in search of vermin often have short legs and long snouts so they can seek out the critters close to the ground or burrowing in holes.  On the other hand, cats all pretty much look the same.  Most have ears that stand up, long tails, and a similar shape to their body and head.  It’s not as difficult to learn all of the cat breeds as it is dog breeds!  I’m still processing images from the last 2 dog shows that I attended.  This Sheltie image is from the Chester Valley Kennel Club Show.  I’ll have a few new website pages of dog show images soon.  Stay tuned!

The weekend of the Civil War Reenactment was hot and humid.  The reenactors camped out in tents and cooked all of their meals over camp fires.  Many were cooking as I walked around the site on Saturday.  Wow – it had to be 90 degrees with 90% humidity and then add camp fires to that mx!  HOT isn’t the word!   Plus, the reenactors were wearing long sleeves, hoop skirts, and heavy military clothing with hats!   They are real troopers….pun intended!  🙂  Here is a link to some of my favorite images from the day:  http://www.betsydallasphoto.com/Camp%20Geiger%202010.html

Day Lilies are appropriately named as they only bloom for a day.  This one lived up to it’s title.  I’m sure the heat, humidity and last night’s heavy rain helped to shorten it’s lifespan as well.  While photographing with the Lensbaby Composer and soft focus optic, the lens kept fogging from the humid air.  So…this image may have some EXTRA soft focus added thanks to Mother Nature!  🙂

Remember when the dash on your car had all kinds of knobs to control the radio, vents, heat, defrost, etc.?  And when the radio DIDN’T have a scan button to search for stations?  Those were the days!  I love the pretty colors of some of the cars from yesterday….baby blue, teal, purple, pink, bright yellow, even two-tone.  They were so cool … even without the fuzzy dice!

This weekend I participated in Relay for Life – a 24 hour event to benefit The American Cancer Society.  A highlight is the Luminaria ceremony where hundreds of decorated bags line the track to honor or remember those who have won or lost their battle with cancer.  A candle is placed inside each bag and when they are all illuminated after dark it is very moving.  In the above photo, a Relay participant and their dog walk and look for bags honoring loved ones.  I’m so happy to be a part of Relay each year.  Please look for a Relay for Life event in your area and take part.
