Viper is one cool Boxer …. and yesterday he made it to the Best in Show ring for the first time ever by winning his Group [Working] at the Allentown Kennel Club show.  Viper is only 17 months old and is already a force to reckon with in the ring!  He’s owned and very much loved by my friends Jen and Steve.  You should see Viper jump….he goes from all 4 paws on the ground to jumping 3 feet off the ground!  What a personality….very calm, cool and collected but fun-loving at the same time!  To see more photos of Viper, visit:  http://www.betsydallasphoto.com/Viper.html

Today’s Best in Show at the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club Show in Allentown, Pa. went to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi!  Whoo hoo – congratulations!!

For me an important aspect of photographing dogs and cats is having an uncluttered background.  When you get low to the ground to photograph at their level, you also get low enough to include chair legs, people legs, and everything else that is visible down low.  I don’t live and die by the ‘get down to their level’ rule for photographing babies and pets.  In fact, a colored floor – carpet, tile, even grass etc. – is often a wonderful background for a pet, so shooting down at them can be a plus!  In this image, the background was very light and that gave more of a portrait look to this image which I really liked.

I’ll bet that you and your pet have THIS in common:  It’s the middle of the day and a friend asks you to go to lunch.  You eat more than your usual portion size  [yeah, that 12″ sub was probably not a good idea!]  and by mid-afternoon, you’re ready for a nap!   Isn’t that true?  And doesn’t your pet do exactly the same thing?  Well…maybe not the eating a 12″ sub part, but taking a nap after a meal for sure!  My cats are all full of energy when I come home from work.  I give them their dinner and for the rest of the night they are sprawled across the bed or the sofa sound asleep!  If only we could take a nap whenever we wanted…just like our pets do!  What a life!

Ahhh….my alma mater, Muhlenberg College.  What a beautiful campus with amazing architecture!  Most of the buildings have red doors as a sign of welcome and typical of the European/Protestant [Lutheran] heritage of the college.  The dome/bell tower is the focal point of the campus.  I spent many a happy day here and have some wonderful memories of interesting classes and inspiring professors.  It was at Muhlenberg that I learned to develop film in their darkroom.  It was a summer photography class and I loved most every aspect of it … except being in that tiny room, in total darkness, with a canister and a can opener.  I’ll never forget the time we were assigned to photograph motion, so I went to an amusement park and shot a roll or two of film.  Something went terribly wrong in the developing and the negatives were blank!!  I had to drive all the way back to the amusement park [1-1/2 hours each way], reshoot the assignment, go back to the college and develop and print the images all before the next class.   Aaaacckkkk!!   I still am thankful to have had the opportunity to learn to develop and print my own images in the darkroom!  Thank you Muhlenberg!!
