How cute is Emmie wearing her pink polka dot sneakers?

The Columbine flowers were beautiful at Longwood Gardens back in April. I chose to shoot with just one lens all day – my Lensbaby Velvet 56 – all handheld. Quite a different experience from my earlier visits to Longwood when I almost always shot with my 100mm macro and a tripod. Assigning yourself a project is a great way to break out of a photographic slump!

I learned an awfully long time ago that you have to be very patient and silent when photographing birds. Take a step…wait awhile…take a step…wait awhile…etc. as you get closer to the subject. Brewster has mastered the art of bird watching from the windowsill. He knows that if he pounces onto the sill, he will scare away any bird that saw him. So instead, he sits behind the curtain and peeks out of the window … secretly watching the birds and hoping not to be noticed. (He’s probably secretly licking his chops as well!)
