The tulip display at Longwood Gardens is always worth a visit.  The challenge is to come away with photos that don’t have people in them because the crowds are very large at this time of year!  I shot almost exclusively with my Lensbaby on this visit because I wanted a softer look to my images.

We are having the craziest weather!  A few weeks ago we had a snowfall of over 24″.  Last weekend, the temperatures were in the teens with wind chills below zero and drifting snow.  Today, it was 64 degrees with bright sunshine that definitely gave me a touch of spring fever!  I’m thinking ahead to flowers and macro photography!  I can’t wait!

The Japanese Maple tree in my yard is quite a show-stopper.  It has burgundy leaves throughout the summer and as if to show off for the world before winter, the leaves turn vivid red right before they drop to the ground.  It’s quite the opposite of the other trees which display their pretty orange, yellow and red colors first, then turn brown and fall.  I usually wait until the Japanese Maple has dropped all of its leaves before I begin raking.  I love seeing the bright red mixed with the brown oak leaves and sprigs of grass.  Today I was feeling a little artsy and so I processed this image with Topaz Impression and gave it a painting-like effect.

We’ve had a LOT of rain this summer in my neck of the woods.  Just yesterday we received over an inch.  It was torrential at times!  In some ways the garden has been thriving (the weeds are growing like crazy!) and then there are the plants and flowers that don’t like too much water.  Here’s one that tolerates wet soil nicely …. with a rain droplet on the petal.

Ever since visiting the lavender farm, I’ve become a lavender-aholic!  I bought a couple of plants for my garden, but am not feeling very successful so far.  One died and the other isn’t looking so great.  The leaves are turning brown at the bottom of the plant.  Too much water, not enough water, too much sun, not enough sun, poor soil?  Who knows!  Here’s a photo of one of the plants just before the flowers opened.  (Shot with the Lensbaby Velvet 56)  All lavender growing tips welcome!
