This image was shot during the height of the snowstorm this past week. I photographed this scene in my yard using the Lensbaby Composer and soft focus optic, then converted it to black and white. Finally I applied a Fractalius filter for a more artsy kind of look. I’ll be happy to see flowers in my yard instead of snow…blah! 🙂

I was out briefly with my camera today but didn’t come back with many images that I liked. Getting around was difficult. Many areas that I wanted to visit in my neighborhood were inaccessible due to the depth of the snow and my unwillingness to get ridiculously wet. It seemed that the kids and birds were having the most fun. The rest of us “older folks” just deemed the results of the blizzard as a major nuisance. I may not see the grass in my yard until May……..

Holy cow….THIS is a blizzard! I didn’t venture any farther than the front porch today to capture these images. How could I? The snow is well over my knees and I don’t have high enough boots! I just want to snap my fingers and have it all disappear! The birds were enjoying the feast of sunflower seeds that my feeders provided and they didn’t seem to mind the cold and blowing snow. There were Tufted Titmouses, Black Capped Chickadees, White Breasted Nuthatches, Mourning Doves, a Bluejay and the ever-present gray squirrels. I hope I see my most-favorite person ever very soon….the man who comes to plow my driveway! 🙂

When I see flowers, my first instinct is to pull out my 100mm macro lens. However, being as I was freezing and my macro lens was back in the car, I decided to photograph this group of flowers/weeds in the snow with my 50mm lens and a shallow DOF to keep just the foreground stems in focus. There is something to be said for not having to kneel down in the snow in 20 degree weather! 🙂

I had to talk myself into going out to photograph today…it was bitterly cold! Since we had snow on Friday, I thought I’d head to a nearby lake that I photographed in the Fall. There were some folks ice fishing, and parents pulling children on sleds across the frozen water. I knew I wouldn’t be out long, so I photographed a few things and started to head back to the warmth of my house. On the way I spotted this nice red barn nestled in the valley. The above image was processed with Topaz Simplify. The one below is without Simplify.
